Drowsy Driving

My commute home has become dangerous. For the first time in my life I am driving tired. Morning is great. Afternoon has become a nightmare.

Never in my 32 years of driving have I been sleepy behind the wheel. Now it happens way too much. I down two cups of coffee and a 24 oz. diet Pepsi to ward off the drowsiness before I leave work. It doesn’t always help.

The commute home has turned into 1 1/2 hours for the 25 mile drive. From folks I’ve spoken with, the train is the same amount of time. And there is a lot of standing, as it is usually packed.

My second interview for a particular job is tomorrow at 5pm. The location is 20 minutes from home. I am hoping I get the job, not only because I need to leave the company where I currently work, but I need to not die.

  1. That’s dangerous. My brother totaled his first truck falling asleep at the wheel…ran straight into a tree.

Maybe try to space your caffeine intake longer throughout the ride instead of before, so that you’re riding the buzz instead of getting hit by the crash partway through.

    Or something.

    Be safe.

  2. I think this might be diet related or it might be worthwhile getting checked out for diabetes.

From the tone of your post you don’t sound depressed so I’d ignore that aspect.
On the diet side the highs and subsequent lows of caffeine aren’t necessarily very good.

  3. @drivingcourses Thanks for the comment. Annual doc visit is A-OK on all of the things they test for…blood sugar, etc. I do have pernicious anemia, but the B12 shots have been doing wonders. Just can’t figure out why all of a sudden I am totally exhausted again every afternoon. I rarely drink soda so this is a new one for me to have to drink it so late in the day. And then I fall asleep just fine. Maybe another trip to the doc is in order.

  4. I hate that feeling, I get drowsy behind the wheel way too often. Hope you get the job!

Also I tried emailing you the Dexter links and it was returned to me because of spam content. I’m not spamming you, I promise.

  5. I hope you get the job. An hour and a half commute does not sound pleasant. And who wants to be stuck in a car for that much time whilst sleepy?

If you get an afternoon break (and really, we all should!) try going for an invigorating 10 minute walk around the block. Brief and quick exercise can wake you up pretty nicely.

  6. I totaly hope you get the job.
On the Drowsy homefront, I kept a squirt bottle in my car, and I would spray myself in the face. Mind you it only works for a short time and then you have to do it again. Sometimes I came home soaked. But I came home.
    Feel better sweetness.

  7. Good luck on the nearby job! On long drives late at night, I find that rolling down all the windows (especially in the winter) will help you stay awake, although its efficacy is dampened once hypothermia sets in, ironically making you even SLEEPIER.

So, you know, watch out for that, then.

And I’m with Sra on the 10-minute walk. Well, I mean, I’m not WITH her on the walk. That’s just silly. We live thousands of miles apart, for Pete’s sake. Now that will make you sleepy.

Anyway, good luck with the job and the whole staying alive thing!

Oh, and I’m now on Twitter, although I’m not sure why. Stupid peer pressure! That’s how I got sucked into AmWay.
