Cell phone, Meebo, and IM overload
My Outlook calendar showed I had “lunch with Jace” from 1pm to 2pm today. It was really a job interview. So when I got back to my office, starving, at 2:30, I couldn’t heat up my South Beach Whatever Was On Sale Tasty Frozen Dinner and eat at my desk. Our Outlook calendars are public, and that would look suspicious to my boss, eating two lunches. So I took my South Beach Whatever Was On Sale Tasty Frozen Dinner out of the second floor fridge and went up to the third floor kitchen and heated it up in the microwave.
As I was doing so, my cell phone rang and it was Tina from the ad agency.
Tina: Sterk, I’m instant messaging with your daughter.
Sterk: What?
Now at this point, let me explain that my IM comes on automatically when I start up my home laptop. I have turned off the “auto turn on” function many times, but I guess I haven’t done it correctly.
Their conversation went something like this:
Daughter says:
Hey Tina it’s me Sterkworks’ Daughter, are you on?
Tina Says:
Hey darlin how are ya?
Daughter says:
Good! Do you work with my mom
Tina Says:
Yup. I work at a different place but I work on projects with her a lot. Was today the last day of school?
Daughter says:
Okay, but can you call her or something because I can’t find my phone and mom wants me 2 call her and 2day is not the end of school my school started late.
Tina says:
Oh I see. Yes I’ll call her right now. Hold on….. (And this is when I got her call in the kitchen.)
Tina says:
Your mom called you about 10 minutes ago so she thinks maybe your phone is off. She said she’ll keep trying so try to listen for it. Hee hee, your mom is laughing. Are you home and ok?
Daughter says:
Yes
Tina says:
Ok good, she’ll keep trying to call you, ok?
Daughter says:
But it is not on and I don’t know where it is
Tina says:
Ah nuts. Do you need to ask her a question or just check in? I can call her again if you need me to.
Daughter says:
Will u tell her I am on messenger live so I can talk to her and she can talk 2 me?
At that moment, I had gone over to @punkygirl’s desk on the third floor and asked her to sign into meebo on her account. (We aren’t allowed to have IM at work.)
After calling me back, Tina says:
Your mom is at her friend @punkygirl’s desk so she can sign on. She will IM you from @punkygirl ok? Let me know if you don’t hear from her ok?
Daughter says:
Okay thank you so much !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Tina says:
You’re welcome!!!!!!
Daughter says:
Okay see you l8ter
Tina says:
l8ter sk8ter
At this point, @punkygirl instructed daughter to sign off of my account at home and sign on to her own account, then I went to my desk, dumping my lunch in the garbage, signed on to meebo and chatted with my daughter. She finally found her phone.
Whew. Who knew technology could be so complicated.
Proud of daughter for following the rules and calling me when getting home from school. Very happy she used her noggin when she couldn’t find her phone. Very glad I have great friends like Tina and @punkygirl who help me be a good mom.
