Annie Liebowitz and Her Lolita Lust?
I must admit that a little bit of urine leaks from my bladder whenever I receive anything in the mail from BYU (Brigham Young University), owned by the Mormon church. This doesn’t happen often, which is too bad because with all the floor mopping I would have to do, my kitchen floor would be spotless.
Last week my heart leaped into my throat when I got a letter from BYU. Now I haven’t been on the BYU campus since 1996ish when a Chinese art exhibit was being held there. (I don’t smoke, but I so wanted to light up on campus, just for the hell of it.)
I opened the letter, and enclosed were the “Stadium of Fire” tickets I was fortunate enough to get for the Fourth of July celebration this year. Independence Day has always been my favorite holiday. When we lived in Vegas, we would drive up to Provo, home of BYU, each summer for the great 4th of July parade. My grandparents lived across from the park where the parade went by, and my grandfather would set up chairs the night before so we always had great seats. My mother made matching red, white, and blue shirts for her and my dad, and all five kids.
This year, Miley Cyrus is the headliner of the celebration, and I although I couldn’t afford concert tickets when she played in SLC earlier this year, I figured I could afford “Stadium of Fire” tickets. I got nose bleed seats, but my daughter was thrilled. So was I.
And now what in the hell is Billy Ray Cyrus and his wife thinking? Miley is 15 years old. What the hell was Annie Liebowitz thinking? The Lolita photo in Vanity Fair? A little lesbo Lolita lust on the part of Annie Liebowitz? And Billy Ray? WTF? This is your daughter! I feel bad for Miley. And I haven’t even looked at the MySpace pages that are supposed to be worse.
So last year, I had to explain to my daughter why we know Lindsay Lohan made mistakes in using drugs, but people can make mistakes and then try and correct them and it doesn’t mean they are bad people and we hope she works everything out.
Then I had to explain how Vanessa Hudgens, from High School Musical, had some not too modest pictures on the internet, and that sometimes when you are famous or want to be, you make bad decisions, and that doesn’t mean you are a bad person.
Now I am planning my Miley reasoning. And I am blaming it on her parents. God Bless America.

I have to comment on this, because it’s been rattling around in my brain today and I need an outlet. First of all, I respect Annie Liebowitz like no other. She’s as good as it gets when it comes to what she does, and I’m quite certain… even without seeing them, that that pictures she took of little Hannah Montana are artistic and beautiful. Second, there are a lot of haters out there bashing Annie and the magazine about this. Let me remind them:
1. Miley is 15, so her parents/guardian (in this case, Billy Ray) HAD to be present AND APPROVE any poses or wardrobe used.
2. Said pictures HAD to have been not only viewed, but signed off on by Miley and Billy Ray (as her guardian) before they could be published.
3. Miley, Billy Ray, and Annie all knew EXACTLY what they were doing.
This whole thing smacks of nothing more than propaganda designed solely to increase readership. It wouldn’t surprise me if this was all set up in advance.
This makes me wonder what things I’ll have to explain in the future to my now 9 month old daughter… Hmmm
@Sov I completely agree. I think Miley did what her parents planned for her. I just can’t understand what they were thinking. There comes a time when a tween idol needs to move up to the bigger leagues, but 15 is a bit too young.
I too love Annie and her art, and was saddened at the loss of her partner last year. But I still question this piece of art a bit. Very grey area for me.
If that Chinese exhibit included several of those human-sized statues and some mirrors to make it look like they went on forever, then I was at that exhibit too. It was lovely.
I think the Cyrus incident was just what you said — a mistake. Sometimes you and your guardian know what you’re doing, but make mistakes anyway. Miley herself has said that she is embarrassed by the photos. Poor thing. I think it is in poor taste to pose a 15 year old like that, even if she has a very successful singing career and looks more like she’s 30.

Fun being a parent in America these days, huh? I have two daughters, now aged 22 & 17. Trying to raise them while being pelted in all directions by what I considered to be age-inappropriate messages and images from movies, TV, music lyrics & videos, magazines, etc. was truly daunting. Then, of course, we had all of these celebrities going off the rails, or directly marketing sex to young girls (see Spears & Aguilera) and finally, of course, ol’ disbarred Bill and his Oval Office disgrace.
Keeping kids kids is overwhelmingly difficult when there are sleazebag adults looking to make a buck off of peddling soft-core porn to kids.
The old answer “turn it off” is a cop-out by people making money off titillating 11 year olds. You can’t “turn it off.” It is all-consuming.
Annie has become addicted to her own importance, having spent too much time with other self-indulgent people.
